Transport for Wales (TfW) has officially reopened Ty Glas railway station following the successful completion of a major modernisation programme designed to improve safety, accessibility and operational capability on the Coryton line.
While the station’s level crossing reopened to the public in October 2025 after essential safety improvements, TfW has continued work on site to deliver the remaining infrastructure upgrades required to bring the station up to modern standards.
Key station upgrades delivered at Ty Glas
The completed works at Ty Glas include a series of targeted improvements to support safer operations and enhanced passenger experience:
- Platform extension: The station platform has been extended by 16 metres, enabling it to accommodate longer trains.
- Safety enhancements: A renewed level crossing surface and a safer pedestrian route linking the station directly to the crossing.
- Accessibility improvements: The upgrades now support level boarding, significantly improving accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility.
With all works now complete, Ty Glas station reopened to passengers on 4 April, restoring services for customers travelling on the Coryton line.
Enabling new Class 756 tri‑mode trains
The station upgrades are a critical requirement to allow TfW’s new electric Class 756 tri‑mode trains to call at Ty Glas for the first time.
The Class 756 fleet forms part of the Welsh Government’s £800 million investment in new rolling stock and was introduced on the Coryton line last year. The trains have already delivered strong performance across the Core Valley Lines, averaging over 90% reliability during the past six months.
TfW leadership comment
Dan Tipper, Chief Infrastructure Officer at TfW, said:

“These upgrades were essential to support our quieter, faster accelerating electric trains and to ensure the safety of the many people who use the level crossing each day.”
He added:
"We’d like to thank the communities along the Coryton line for their patience and understanding throughout the closure”.
Supporting the South Wales Metro transformation
The reopening of Ty Glas station represents another milestone in the ongoing delivery of the South Wales Metro, one of the UK’s most significant rail transformation programmes.
With the infrastructure now fully compatible, TfW customers can benefit from the new Class 756 trains at Ty Glas station for the first time, delivering quieter, more accessible and more reliable services for local communities.
