The rail network in Wales is set for another accessibility milestone, after engineers successfully installed the main span for the footbridge at Llanelli station.
Lifting and placing the bridge span took two hours, according to Network Rail, and followed other work to install the landings and stairs on both platforms. The footbridge will provide step-free access between the two platforms.
Network Rail’s lead portfolio managed for Wales and borders, Theo Smith, said: “We’re really pleased to see the work progressing well at Llanelli station with the successful installation of the bridge span, following on from the recent installation of the staircases and landings.”
The work was completed by contractors AmcoGiffen overnight, while the station was closed to passengers – the road Great Western Crescent was closed to allow site access. The next step of the project at Llanelli station involves the installation of the lift shafts.
Llanelli is one of six stations in Wales and Borders becoming step-free and more accessible – improvements are being funded by the Department for Transport, as part of the government’s Access for All programme.
“I’d like to thank passengers and residents for their patience while we continue making these important improvements,” added Theo. “I look forward to seeing the completion of this work, which will provide a fully accessible station and more comfortable journeys for all rail users.”
