Passengers using the West Coast Main Line are being thanked after a major programme of infrastructure upgrades was successfully delivered across Lancashire and Cumbria during April.
Network Rail, working with its supply chain partners, has completed the replacement of more than 50 kilometres of overhead line equipment between Preston, Lancaster and Fylde. The work forms part of a wider £400m investment programme targeting improvements across the West Coast Main Line – the UK’s busiest mixed‑use railway, carrying both passenger and freight services.
The intensive programme required changes to train services between Saturday 11 April and Sunday 19 April, with passengers on the northern section of the route advised to plan ahead while the work was carried out.
Alongside the overhead line renewals in Lancashire, signalling systems were also upgraded between Carlisle and the Scottish border, improving reliability and performance on a critical cross‑border section of the route.
With services now returning to normal, Network Rail has publicly thanked passengers for their patience during the essential works.
Paul Danks, Network Rail senior programme manager, said:
“Upgrading the overhead power systems for trains is vital to keep passenger and freight services running smoothly, and replacing 50kms over an extended railway closure will mean more reliable journeys in future.
“We know there’s never a good time to close the railway, so we thank those who’ve been impacted by these essential upgrades in Lancashire and Cumbria. It’s all part of our ongoing investment into the West Coast Main Line over the next several years.”

Further disruption planned over early May bank holiday
Passengers are also being reminded to plan ahead for another major programme of work over the early May bank holiday, taking place from 2–4 May.
In the North West, Liverpool Lime Street station will be completely closed on Sunday and Monday morning, allowing engineers to carry out essential signalling upgrades in the Edge Hill area. Additional overhead line renewals are also planned between Warrington and Preston.
Further south, passengers travelling to and from London Euston will face a reduced timetable, as track improvements are delivered in North West London.
Network Rail is urging customers to check journey plans in advance and allow extra time while this work is completed, noting that the upgrades are essential to improving reliability, capacity and long‑term performance on one of the country’s most strategically important rail corridors.
