Zentralbahn has taken delivery of the first vehicle from its new FINK fleet, marking a significant milestone in the largest rolling stock procurement programme in the Swiss railway operator’s history.
The first of ten new FINK trains, designated FINK 1, was transported overnight from Stadler’s manufacturing facility in Bussnang to Interlaken Ost on 12-13 August 2026. Following its arrival, the vehicle was successfully unloaded and transferred onto the Zentralbahn network.
The train will now be based in Meiringen, where it will begin an extensive commissioning and testing programme designed to ensure it is fully prepared for passenger service.
Comprehensive Testing Under Real Operating Conditions
Over the coming months, Zentralbahn engineers and technical teams will subject the train to a rigorous series of type tests and operational assessments.
The programme will evaluate key systems including vehicle handling, braking performance, rack-and-pinion operation, adhesion drive technology, onboard control systems and train protection equipment.
The testing phase is intended to verify the train's performance across the varied operating conditions found on the Zentralbahn network before final certification is granted.
Once all testing requirements have been successfully completed, FINK 1 will receive regulatory approval and enter commercial passenger service.

Passenger Service Planned for December 2026
Zentralbahn expects the new train to begin carrying passengers from 13 December 2026, coinciding with the introduction of a new half-hourly service between Lucerne and Engelberg.
Initially, FINK 1 will be deployed primarily on the upgraded route, helping to improve capacity and service frequency for passengers travelling through central Switzerland.
The remaining nine FINK units are scheduled to enter service progressively in the weeks following the December timetable change.

Built in Switzerland for Capacity and Comfort
Manufactured by Stadler in Bussnang, each FINK train has been designed to meet growing passenger demand while maintaining high standards of comfort.
The new fleet provides:
- 111 second-class seats
- 17 first-class seats
- 128 seats in total
Production of each vehicle takes approximately ten months.
Further Fleet Expansion on the Horizon
Zentralbahn's fleet modernisation programme extends beyond the FINK trains. The operator is also planning the introduction of seven ADLER trains from the end of 2027.
Together, the new FINK and ADLER fleets represent the most significant rolling stock investment in Zentralbahn's history, aimed at delivering greater capacity, enhanced reliability and a modern passenger experience across its network.
