Elizabeth Line trains undergoing final testing phases, travelling through tunnels at 60mph
The first footage of the new Elizabeth line of trains being tested in London has been released, with the major infrastructure project now in its final stages.
Images show the new fleet’s automatic train control system (which operates in the central section of the route) being tested alongside overhead power equipment in the tunnels, platform screen doors, and mechanical and electrical equipment being tested as well.
The overhead power equipment for the new line — due to be opened in December — running from Abbey Wood to Canary Wharf was successfully switched on in the remaining section between Westbourne Park and Stepney, meaning the Elizabeth lines are now fully energised.
Once the line is fully completed and operational, the infrastructure will be handed over to TfL, who will lead the trail operations and commissioning phase ahead of opening the line.
Mark Wild, managing director of London Underground and the Elizabethan Line said the new trains will provide “better, quicker and more comfortable” journeys for commuters. The line is now running through tunnels at speeds of up to 60mph.
“Much more hard work is still to be done on completing stations, testing signalling and training staff,” Wild said. “This is now underway to ensure that people can enjoy the Elizabeth line for the first time in December.”
Simon Wright, Crossrail chief executive & programme director, said: “Construction of the Elizabeth line is now in its final stages with a huge effort underway to complete and commission this fantastic new railway.
“Significant progress continues to made with station fit-out heading towards completion, installation of platform screen doors complete, electrical equipment being switched on and train testing in the tunnels underway.”
The Crossrail project is being delivered by Crossrail Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of TfL and is jointly sponsored by TfL and the DfT.
