Amey awarded £3m TPWS Crossrail contract
Network Rail has awarded Amey a £3m contract to provide Train Protection and Warning Systems (TPWS) design and installation services for the Crossrail project.
Over the course of the 18-month contract, Amey, part of the team that pioneered the development of the original TPWS safety system, will design and install a bespoke system for the new Crossrail trains.
Lee Jones, director of rail operations for Amey, said: “This contract award reflects both the expertise we can offer in TPWS systems and our position as a trusted supplier to Network Rail. I am pleased that we can support them through the delivery of an essential safety system on such a significant project.”
Crossrail is due to go live in 2018 and will offer improved cross-capital links to London commuters. The TPWS system will then be replaced with the new European Train Control System currently under development, which will enable the electronic relay of signalling and lineside information directly to the driver inside the cab.
Recently, the production of Crossrail trains reached “an important milestone” with the completion of the first Aventra bodyshell at Bombardier’s train manufacturing plant in Derby.
The test carriage is being used to refine the design and manufacturing techniques needed for the production of 594 carriages making up 66 Crossrail trains.
