Heathrow Express Class 332s taken out of service for ‘foreseeable future’

Structural defects have been found on the underside of a number of Heathrow Express Class 332 trains, which have been taken out of service “for the foreseeable future.”

The Class 332s are undergoing further examination and maintenance, assisted by engineers sent from Germany and Spain by Siemens and CAF. The problem first became apparent on Sunday when a ‘crack’ was discovered on one train.

Fraser Brown, director of Heathrow Express, said: “The safety of our customers and colleagues remains our top priority. We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused so far, and assure passengers that we are doing everything we can to return to running a full and safe service, as quickly as possible. We would like to thank all our customers for their patience.”

Class 360 units, which are usually used on the Heathrow Connect route, have been brought in to provide a 15 minute service.

Pre-bought Heathrow Connect tickets will be accepted on the Heathrow Express, and 140 bus services between Heathrow and Hayes & Harlington. They will also be accepted on the London Underground between Paddington and Heathrow.

Suppose that Heathrow Express would have to use couple Class 360's and may even ask Abellio Greater Anglia to borrow few Class 360's as the Class 332's are out of service at the moment.

Andrew, the Greater Anglia 360s would be of no use as they are not fitted with the correct train protection system for the Heathrow branch. And aren't you always complaining that Greater Anglia should get new trains? These are some of the newest in their fleet.

So Heathrow Express don't need to borrow few Class 360's from Abellio GA as they are fitted with the correct train protection system plus the AGA Class 360/1's are 4-Car trains and HC/HX Class 360/2's are 5-Car trains.

Plus Heathrow Connect will soon be absorbed as part of the Crossrail network once the new Elizabeth Line opens in 2018 with Heathrow Express to remain once Crossrail takes over the Heathrow Connect stopping service and to Reading from Shenfield and Abbey Wood.

Let's hope that the Class 333s (based on the Heathrow Express Class 332) used by Northern Rail are not affected as well.

Surely it's time for those to be upgraded for 700's

It is shocking that the management of Heathrow Express are able to get away with cancelling all Heathrow Connect services in order to provide trains to run Express services. The result is very severe overcrowding on Paddington suburban trains whilst there are plenty of empty seats on the nonstop trains. It is a no-win situation but the available rolling stock could be better used to provide an emergency timetable with some stops at intermediate stations rather than trying to maintain the nonstop service as an absolute priority. This would still offer a reasonable service from London to the airport whilst putting back some desperately needed lost capacity into the Great Western route between Hayes and Paddington. It would hit BAA financially but the DfT should be intervening to protect the public interest.
