RSSB launches traffic management innovation challenges

A new open innovation programme has been launched by the RSSB and 100%Open. The Future Traffic Regulation Optimisation (FuTRO) programme aims to develop traffic management to deliver capacity and reliability on the network.

The programme includes two challenges: the Universal Data Challenge, which asks how we can manage the future railway through combining diverse data sources, and the Supermap Challenge, which aims to create an accurate and versatile map of the rail network to help optimise the system.

Network Rail’s John Collins said: “This was an exciting opportunity to bring fresh insights into how the railway’s ever-rising traffic volumes are managed so that customers have the trains they need at the times they need well into the longer term. FuTRO will enhance capacity and provide passengers with the journey time reliability they seek.”

RSSB’s James Hardy said: ‘It was good to see aspiring innovators together to kick-start the challenges. It was an opportunity to network with people not just in the rail industry but participants who have interests in the data, design aspects and potential new business models.”

FuTRO forms part of the Future Railway initiative led by the Technical Strategy Leadership Group.
