Greater Anglia has successfully delivered a £1 million improvement programme at Harwich International railway station, marking a significant step forward in enhancing passenger facilities and operational resilience.
The comprehensive upgrade focused on renewing key station infrastructure. Works included replacing the roofing over the footbridge, staircases, and station entrance building, alongside ceiling upgrades in these areas. The station has also been fully repainted, creating a brighter and more welcoming environment for customers.
A major sustainability feature of the project was the installation of new energy-efficient lighting throughout the station. This not only improves visibility and safety but also supports Greater Anglia’s commitment to reducing environmental impact.
The programme was delivered over four weekends in September, strategically aligned with Network Rail Anglia’s scheduled engineering works on the Colchester/Ipswich to Harwich Town line. Close collaboration with Harwich Port Authority ensured minimal disruption to passengers during the works.

Andrew Goodrum, Infrastructure & Major Projects Director at Greater Anglia, commented:
“More than 100,000 journeys start or finish at Harwich International railway station every year, and these improvements make a significant difference to the overall passenger experience.
The station is now brighter, more modern and more welcoming, while our new energy-efficient lighting reduces our carbon footprint.
We would like to thank our passengers for their patience and understanding while this work was carried out, and our partners for their collaboration in delivering this upgrade programme.”
