A major milestone for Greater Manchester’s rail network has been reached with the unveiling of a new £10 million high‑tech maintenance depot at Guide Bridge—designed to improve reliability for both passenger and freight services.
The purpose‑built facility is now home to more than 120 Network Rail staff who work around the clock to keep the region’s railway running safely and smoothly. Constructed in just over a year on a former 2.3‑acre siding, the two-storey depot replaces ageing temporary cabins and brings four separate track maintenance teams together under one roof for the first time.
Network Rail says the move will foster closer collaboration, deliver faster incident response times and ultimately lead to fewer delays for rail users.
Despite its scale, the project came in £6 million under budget, achieved through a combination of efficient build sequencing, smarter material choices and challenging traditional railway construction methods.
Clare Waller, Network Rail’s interim North West route director, said:
“It’s fantastic to see this new depot at Guide Bridge now in use and provide modern facilities for the teams based there so they can respond to incidents and maintain the railway for passengers and freight in Greater Manchester.
“The teams have worked across multiple temporary buildings and not the best of environments for many years, so I’m sure this new striking building with top-notch accommodation will make a massive difference to them and the work they are able to achieve.”

Modern facilities for a 24/7 operation
The new depot has been designed with modern accessibility standards in mind, including lift access between floors and fully accessible changing and toilet facilities.
Other key features include:
- 120 male and 20 female lockers, each with associated shower and washroom areas
- A mess room for up to 100 people
- 60 solar panels supplying an estimated 44% of the site’s energy
- A planned buy‑back scheme enabling surplus energy to be sold back to the National Grid
- 10 new EV charging points to support Network Rail’s transition to an all‑electric fleet
Maintenance Delivery Units (MDUs) based at the depot support both daytime operations and overnight engineering work, with teams on duty 24/7 to tackle incidents and keep the network moving.
