HS2 embraces National Apprenticeship Week with an extra 300 roles

With this year’s National Apprenticeship Week well underway, HS2 has bolstered its commitment for workforce expansion through creating ‘Skills for Life’ for a confirmed 300 extra apprenticeship jobs.

Acting as one of the biggest apprenticeship sources within the rail sector, over 1,100 people, of all ages and backgrounds, have already secured a place within the HS2 family, seeing todays announcement putting the project firmly within reach of its 2,000 apprenticeships target before civils works even begin on the northern extension of the network.

Rail Minister Huw Merriman commented on this, saying;

“With over 1,100 people already securing apprenticeships through HS2’s incredible programme, this project is once again demonstrating how its benefits go far beyond improving connectivity.

“As HS2 heads towards its target of 2,000 apprenticeships, it’s playing a vital role in ensuring a career in rail is accessible to all, regardless of their background. I would urge anyone looking for a new challenge to consider one of these varied roles.”

This week will see 80 apprenticeship roles go live, with more to follow in the weeks ahead. The first roles to be advertised include opportunities at HS2 Ltd within its procurement, project management, HR, IT and land and property teams.

Acting as a supply chain powerhouse, HS2 has a plethora of construction partners and integrated SME’s that are also recruiting for over 50 new roles and seeking applicants with an interest in tunnelling, civil engineering, stakeholder engagement, scaffolding and plant operations.

Natalie Penrose, Head of Legacy at HS2 said:

“HS2 is launching its biggest ever apprenticeship recruitment drive and I’d encourage anyone, whether starting out in their career, or looking for a complete change of direction, to take a look at what we can offer.

“The ability to earn and learn means it’s never too late to pursue a different profession, and with opportunities in over 30 different subject areas, there really is something for everyone.”

Apprentices within rail represent the future of the sector, being the future managers and industry leaders that will dictate the growth and direction of the industry. Ensuring these young titans of industry are given the best platform to succeed is vital, shown through HS2’s partnering up with colleges and universities right across the country to secure a high standard of education and training in their chosen subject area.

The learning opportunities are also supplemented through hands on work experience within HS2’s headquarters, satellite offices and 350 live construction sites, where they receive first-hand guidance and learn from some of the very best in the industry.
