Improvement work begins across three level crossings in Staffordshire

Network Rail improvement work will begin this week on three level crossings in Staffordshire.

Engineers will be replacing the older barrier gates and their components with new ones at Caverswall level crossing in Stoke-on-Trent, Hockley level crossing in Uttoxeter and Alrewas level crossing in Lichfield.

The installation of the new crossing will generate a more resilient railway and will decrease delays to services and make sure the level crossings continue to be fit purpose for years to come.

Changes will be put in place for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to make sure the work at each level crossing is carried out safely.

The improvement work will take place during the following dates:

  • Caverswell level crossing will be closed between Feb 27th and March 2nd. A diversion will be put in place for motorists.
  • Hockey level crossing will be closed between March 4th and March 9th. An alternative route for motorists will be put in place.
  • Work will also take place at Alrewas level crossing between March 25th and March 30th. Pedestrian access will be maintained during this time.

Route Level Crossing Manager for Network Rail, Vinny Briggs, said: “This is really important work to modernise these level crossings and make sure they remain fit for purpose.

“The new barriers will improve the reliability of the level crossings in Staffordshire and therefore, help to reduce delays on the railway. We are working hard to minimise any disruption whilst this work takes place and would like to thank all those impacted for their patience.”
