New online database for GB rolling stock to launch this year
Identification and maintenance records for all rolling stock in Great Britain is to be combined into one online system for the first time.
Currently, information on rolling stock is held in two separate legacy systems from British Rail days: the Rolling Stock Library (RSL) and the Rail Vehicle Records System (RAVERS).
From 7 September 2015, these systems will cease to exist and a new web-based version to be known as R2 will provide a one-stop shop for all information related to both passenger and freight trains running on the GB rail network.
Modernising the way rolling stock records are kept and maintained is a crucial step in ensuring that rail journeys in the UK are carried out in safe, modern vehicles, says the RSSB.
The new system is also expected to cost significantly less to run than the two legacy systems being replaced and will integrate fully with other key industry systems including TOPS, Gemini, GENIUS, Integrale, PADS, IMACS and NVR.
RSSB is responsible for ensuring there is a smooth transition to the new system. Users of the new system within both train and freight operating companies are invited to help validate that the functionality of the new system will work and must complete a training course before the switch over date on 7 September, when the old RSL and RAVERS applications will be switched off permanently.
