Work moves forward to prepare Abbey Wood station for Crossrail

Work to prepare Abbey Wood station for Elizabeth Line services moved forward yesterday as Crossrail announced that the construction of platform structures and tracks had been completed by engineers.

The station will be ready for service in autumn this year when the station will open to Southeastern trains.

A number of other upgrades are also being made on the station: the structure of the new ticket hall has been completed and the internal fit-out of the building is underway.

The roof structure, which is formed of timber beams and steel, is also ready, as engineers work to install a zinc cover on it.

Some work is required on the track to install all the systems needed for the line, including overhead electric equipment and signalling as well as seating, information screens and CCTV. 

Matthew White, surface director at Crossrail, said: “Construction of the new station at Abbey Wood will complete later this year.

“The new station will provide an improved experience for the thousands of people who use the station every day. The Elizabeth Line will halve journey times to many central London destinations.”

This latest development follows work being completed to install the ceiling at Farringdon and Liverpool Street stations in preparation for Crossrail passing through.

Writing for the latest issue of RTM, Howard Smith, TfL’s operations director for the project, said that the first of the Elizabeth Line trains was preparing to enter service in May in anticipation of the full infrastructure opening in December 2018.
