New station in Soham revealed with Network Rail to unveil design proposals at public meetings
Proposals for a new railway station in Soham are to be unveiled after Network Rail revealed it had been working with Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) on the plans.
Network Rail will hold community drop-ins in late February to reveal the design proposals for the new station in east Cambridgeshire in front of businesses and residents.
The proposals are still currently in development, but will include new platforms at the site of the former Soham station which closed in 1965, as well as car parking facilities and a new footbridge.
Network Rail said “building a new station would reconnect the town with the rail network and help to improve growth in the area, jobs and investment in the town.”
The initial designs will be released at meetings on 26 and 27 February, and the design is due to be completed by July.
The early design work for the new station would allow for a second platform and footbridge to be constructed and a second track added as part of a future project.
The CPCA commissioned Network Rail to develop the possible options for the new station, to assess what was required to deliver it, and make sure the provision of the station delivers value for money.
