Contract awarded by Network Rail to strengthen bridges

Three contracts have been awarded by Network Rail to carry out strengthening work to three railway bridges across the Wessex route in the South of England.

The contract with Dyer and Butler, part of M Group Services, includes all aspects from design to delivery at three locations which are Station Road, Leatherhead in Surrey, Emsworth Road in Portsmouth and Queen Elizabeth Road in Kingston-upon-Thames.

The works to these bridges will include steelwork repairs, surface preparation and painting, brickwork repairs and installation of new ballast boards.

Work has already begun at Station Road in Leatherhead and all three bridges are expected to be completed by the end of March 2021.

Ben Wilkinson, Network Rail Wessex Route Asset Manager, said: “We are pleased to be working with Dyer and Butler which is another example of Network Rail and its supplier working to deliver a project that will benefit passengers and local communities.

“These works help to deliver a more reliable train service by enhancing the condition and resilience of these bridges. Once complete, these bridges will have an improved appearance and it will be easier and safer for our engineers to inspect and maintain them in future.”

Robert Haley, Dyer & Butler Project Manager, said: “We’re delighted to have been appointed to deliver these underbridge strengthening works across Network Rail’s Wessex route.

“These works will deliver important structural amendments, ultimately making the railway safer and stronger, with minimal traffic disruption in the process.”
